Create and revoke API keys

Create a usage-only API key to send telemetry to Tokenize, and revoke keys you no longer need.

An API key lets a tool send usage data to your Tokenize organization, for example Claude Code's OpenTelemetry export on a machine without the desktop app. Keys you create in Settings → API keys only send usage data. To give a computer guidance, policies, MCP settings, and app updates, install the desktop app and enroll the device instead. See Install on your computer.

Who can do this: Admins.

Create a key

  1. Go to Settings → API keys.
  2. Optionally enter a Name, such as "Production usage", so you can recognize the key later.
  3. Optionally set Expires after (days, optional). Leave it empty for a key that never expires.
  4. Click Create key.
  5. In the Save your API key dialog, copy the key. You won't be able to see it again. The dialog also shows the Environment variables to send Claude Code telemetry with this key.
  6. Click Done.

Store the key in a password manager or secrets store. If you lose it, create a new key and revoke the old one.

For setting up telemetry with the key, see OpenTelemetry.

Usage-only keys

Keys created on this page have no owner. In the Owner column they show a Usage only badge: "This key only sends usage data. Enroll a device to receive settings and app updates."

A computer that uses a usage-only key sends data normally, but Tokenize refuses its requests for settings. It does not receive:

  • Guidance
  • Model policies
  • MCP server settings
  • App updates

If you set up the desktop app with a usage-only key and those features never arrive, enroll the device instead. Keys created by enrolling a device show the person's email in the Owner column.

Revoke a key

  1. Go to Settings → API keys.
  2. Find the key by its prefix, name, or owner.
  3. Click Revoke.

The key's status changes and Tokenize stops accepting data sent with it. Revoking can't be undone. Data already received stays in Tokenize.

To revoke a single person's computers, see Manage devices.

Troubleshooting

  • "Couldn't create the key. Try again." Check that the expiry is a whole number of days from 1 to 3650, then try again.
  • "Couldn't revoke the key. Try again." Refresh the page and try again.
  • "You don't have access to manage API keys." Ask an admin.
